Metamemory as the source of right frontal activation during recognition ?

Introduction
In episodic memory, while lesional studies focused on the internal temporal regions, activation studies pointed towards frontal activation (FA). Even more intriguing was the right FA prominence during retrieval. The question as to which process it could support is still a matter of debate, even though Tim Shallice's proposal of a preresponse monitoring process has recently found a great support1. Two main discrepancies remain to be explained : 1) Right FA is quite constant in standard target recognition tasks, but frontal lesioned patients (FLP) do not show measurable impairment : does it mean that monitoring is unnecessary for this performance ? 2) ERP and fMRI have raised the possibility that much of right FA might be due to post rather than pre response processing such as response re-evaluation2. Thus, we looked for regions related with the degree of confidence that subjects might have about their response while performing a recognition task as in classical metamemory paradigm.
Methods
12 subjects were selected (all right-handed and French native speakers). They were first presented with 80 words to be remembered (4 sec each, occurrence of 100 to 100000/Mw, 5 to 8 letters), either presented right or left. After a 5-min delay, those words were presented again on the center of the screen. Subjects were scanned twice for two tasks : first simple item recognition with targets mixed with 20% distractors, second recall of the spatial location (right or left). Both were compared to a simple reading task. Confidence was assessed on a subject by subject basis, by asking them to provide a global estimation
